Jaguars settle for 10th in golf opener

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta State finished in 10th place Sunday at the Northern Intercollegiate in Sugar Grove, Ill. The tournament marked the season opener for the Jaguars, beginning their second season under head coach Kevin McPherson.

The Jaguars posted their best round of the event with a 307 (+23). Sophomore Robin Petersson enjoyed the team's best round of the day -- a 2-over 73 -- and matched his best collegiate finish with a tie for sixth. Junior Alex Wennstam posted a 75 and tied for 34th. Senior Derek Chang signed for a 79, sophomore Cody Shafer had an 80 and freshman Meechai Padung managed an 81. Sophomore Jack Heasman, playing as an individual, turned in a 79.

With a 54-hole total of 888 (+36), Indiana cruised to a 15-stroke victory and was the only team to break 290 in any of the three rounds. St. Mary's (Calif.) was the runnerup, while Liberty, Purdue, Virginia and UCF rounded out the top five. Virginia's Denny McCarthy shot a final-round, 3-under 68 and notched a three-stroke individual victory over Indiana's Michael McGee and Iowa State's Scott Fernandez.

Hosted by Northern Illinois, the tournament was contested at Rich Harvest Farms, the site of the 2009 Solheim Cup. Out of 198 individual rounds in the tournament, there were four sub-70 scores. The average score over the three rounds was 78.36, including 79.62 in the opening round.
