Jaguars golf opens spring in 8th in Puerto Rico

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Augusta State teed off its 2013 schedule Sunday in the first round of the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue at Rio Mar Country Club’s River Course.

The Jaguars combined for a 4-over 292 and are tied for eighth place with Virginia Tech in the 15-team field.

Jaguar freshman Maverick Antcliff fired a 3-under in his collegiate debut. He bounced back from an early double bogey by carding five birdies in a six-hole stretch on the back nine. He is tied for fifth, two shots back of leader Billy Kennerly of Clemson.

ASU senior Derek Chang and sophomore Robin Petersson are tied for 21st after a pair of even-par 72’s. Junior Alex Wennstam signed for a 79 and sophomore Cody Shafer managed an 83.

No. 6 Alabama posted a 9-under 279 to take a one-shot lead over Oklahoma. Clemson, ranked 21st in the nation, is third and trails the Crimson Tide by two strokes, while No. 8 Georgia Tech and No. 20 MU are fourth and fifth, respectively.

The three-day, 54-hole event features eight teams ranked in the top 50. The tourney field includes ASU, Alabama, Clemson, East Tennessee State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Penn State, SMU and Virginia Tech.

ASU will be paired with North Carolina and Virginia Tech in Monday’s second round. A shotgun start is slated for 8:00 a.m., local time.
