Feb. 23, 2014 PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – GRU Augusta finished 11-over after the first day of play to sit 14th at the Hayt Collegiate Invitational hosted by North Florida at the Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
First-round play at historic Sawgrass was suspended at 1:07 p.m. due to inclement weather and resumed at 4:00 p.m. Play stopped again due to darkness at 6:05 p.m., forcing round one to be completed tomorrow starting at 8:20 a.m. Round two will begin following the completion of round one and pairings will be the same as day one. Approximate start of round two will be 9:15 a.m.
Sophomore Maverick Antcliff led the Jags and tied for 21st with a 1-over 73 after day one, while freshman Viktor Edin and junior Cody Shafer tied for 50th at 3-over. Senior Alex Wennstam and freshman Jake Marriott ended their round at 4-over to finish 61st.
No. 88 Coastal Carolina is tied with No. 2 Oklahoma State for the top spot after day one play with both teams sitting 5-under. North Florida sits and third by themselves, while UCF stands alone at fourth. Tulsa and Liberty are tied for fifth, UAB and Tennessee seventh, North Texas 10th, and Troy, Furman and Jacksonville are knotted up at 11th.
The Jaguars are 14th and sit two shots better than UNC Wilmington who rounded out the 15-team field at 13-over. UAB’s Sam Love is ahead of the entire field by himself, claiming the top spot with a 4-under 68.
The Hayt Collegiate Invitational has been contested at the Sawgrass Country Club since 1992. North Florida has used the home course advantage to its liking, posting 11 top three finished and winning the team title in 1994, 2010 and 2013. Last year, North Florida posted a 17-under par 559 to claim the team title, winning by 12 strokes over Duke's five-under par 571. UNF's Kevin Phelan claimed medalist honors with a 13-under par 131, followed by teammate's Sean Dale nine-under par 135 finish.
