Jags take game one over Flagler, 5-3

April 5, 2014 ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The GRU Augusta Jaguars went into Flagler on Saturday afternoon to take game one of the Peach Belt Conference series 5-3 over the Saints, before game two was suspended in the bottom of the seventh inning due to inclement weather.

The Jaguars (14-22, 6-14 PBC) went ahead 1-0 in the fourth inning over the Flagler Saints (18-17, 9- 13 PBC) and never looked back. Connor Gilbert took a hit-by-pitch before Ryan Khan singled and stole second for Ross Miles to knock an RBI-single for the early advantage. Flagler scored one off two hits in the fourth, but the Jags blew it open in the fifth when Jeff Rice’s double scored JD Sabo. Hunter Boose blasted a two-run homer to boost the Jaguar lead in the next at bat.

One more GRU run in the ninth sealed the Jaguar win 5-3 behind senior starter Kip Custer’s eight innings pitched with eight strikeouts. Custer (4-5) went 8.0 innings in the win and allowed 10 hits for three runs. Sabo was 3-for-5 with an RBI and Boose went 1-for-1 with two RBI and a run.

Brown (2-2) pitched a complete game in the loss where he allowed 10 hits for five runs.Senior Clint Echols took over the mound to close out the game for his fifth save of the season. The Jaguars will resume game two tomorrow, before game three concludes the series
