Dec. 21, 2013 HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- GRU Augusta jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first half Saturday and claimed a 66-55 non-conference road win over Coker at Timberlake-Lawton Gym.
With the win, the Jaguars improved to 6-3 and extended their winning streak to five games. The streak is the fifth winning streak of five games or longer under fourth-year head coach Nate Teymer. The contest was the Jags’ last game prior to the holiday break and marked the end of their non-conference schedule.
GRU senior J Ashby came off the bench to post a season-high 19 points. Freshman Tavia Sykes netted 15 points and junior Whitney Rohrback grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
Priscilla Fenty and Hailey Yohn led the Cobras (5-3) with 11 points each and Tanesha Stenson added 10 points.
After three lead changes in the first 5:29 of the game, Ashby connected on a 3-pointer to put the Jags up 11-8 at the 13:09 mark and GRU never trailed again. Lonna Turner’s jumper capped a 6-0 spurt for a 31-17 lead and Sykes gave the Jags their largest lead of the half (36-20) with a trey with 47 seconds left.
A Becky Newhouse layup just 14 seconds into the second half gave GRU its biggest lead of the game at 40-22. Coker managed to cut is deficit to seven with 9:22 left, only to have the Jags answer with a 9-1 spurt to seal the win.
The Jags set a season high in first-half points (38) and the 16-point halftime advantage marked their largest halftime lead through the first nine games. GRU notched a season-high 46 bench points and forced 22 Coker turnovers.
The Jags return to action and resume their Peach Belt Conference schedule on Thursday, Jan. 2, hosting Francis Marion in a 5:30 p.m. matchup in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
