ATLANTA, Ga. - GRU Augusta dropped their second Peach Belt Conference road game of the year on Wednesday night in a 71-67 loss to the Clayton State Lakers in a contest with 12 lead changes.
The Jaguars (17-4, 10-2) shot 7.7 percent from the three-point line, with D’Angelo Boyce making the team’s lone three ball. Boyce had 11 points off the bench and added four steals and three assists, while KJ Sherrill led the team with 22 points and six rebounds. Harold Doby provided 10 points and two assists in his start.
Clayton State had a one-point lead at halftime and held off the Peach Belt leading Jaguars – shooting 51.0 percent from the field to GRU’s 40.4 and posting 60.0 percent from beyond the arc to the Jags’ 7.7. Craig Wong led the Lakers with 21 points and Kelsey Terry had 17.
Down 67-60, the Jags scored on the next three possessions and eventually trailed 67-65 with 20 second left when the Lakers called a timeout. GRU freshman Keshun Sherrill drove the lane for a layup and the team called a timeout. GRU put the Lakers on the free-throw line with a Harold Doby foul and the Lakers only made one to give the Jags a chance. On the next possession, Clayton State’s Charles Shedrick stole the ball from GRU’s Keshun Sherrill and held onto it for the 71-67 upset win.
The Jags host Young Harris in Saturday, Feb. 8 for a Peach Belt Conference 3:30 p.m. game and for Military Appreciation Day.
