March 22, 2014 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguars ended their five-game losing streak and denied No. 7 Georgia College their 10th consecutive win as GRU Augusta took game one 7-1 before falling 6-2 in the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Lake Olmstead Stadium. With the game two win, the Bobcats won the series 3-1 after last night’s 4-3 victory.

GRU (12-18, 4-11) did the same as last night and took an early lead over the Bobcats (20-5, 12-3 PBC). JD Sabo and Ross Miles went back-to-back with singles before Sabo made it first and third when he tagged up on a fly ball to the right side. The Jags put on the double steal as Sabo slid head first into home for a 1-0 GRU lead.

Jaguar righty Tyler Brown (2-1) had the Bobcats scoreless through four innings. His offense came through in the bottom of the inning when Jeff Rice and Hunter Boose singled to start the inning and Connor Gilbert loaded the bases when he reached on a GC third-base error. Everyone moved up on a wild pitch and Chase Loyd’s sacrifice fly put the Jags on top 3-0.

GC got on the board in the fifth when Brandon Benson doubled to trade places with Taylor Hinshaw, but GRU loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fifth for Gilbert to knock a two-run single to left field. The Jags weren’t content with a 5-1 lead as Sabo hit an infield single and Rice plated him with an RBI line drive to left field.

Leading 6-1, the Jaguars relieved Tyler Brown after his 7.1 innings pitched. He held the Bobcats to five hits as they only plated one off of him before Will Robertson came in during the eighth and closed it out for the win. Blue (3-2) took the loss in 5. 0 innings, allowing six hits for five runs.

JD Sabo went 2-for-3 with two runs in the leadoff role for GRU, while Jeff Rice was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Gilbert recorded two RBI and Loyd and Khan one a piece.

Game two saw the Jags take their third early lead of the series when Rice scored Sabo from second on a RBI-single he sent into center field. GC answered in the top of the third with Rob Hogenkamp’s opposite-field single scored Mike McGraw to tie the game. GRU left-handed starter Frank Warren gave up consecutive singles to the right side that scored another for a 2-1 GC lead change.

The Bobcats strengthened their lead to 3-1 on a sacrifice fly to right field after Warren lost two wild pitches in the dirt to put a man on third. Warren got the second out on a strikeout, while catcher Ryan Khan caught McGraw trying to steal third for a two-out play to end the inning. GC scored in the sixth off Daniel Bick’s solo homer, before adding two in the eighth.

The Jags loaded the bases on a leadoff double and two walks gave way to new GC pitcher, Jordan Modine for Josh Taylor. Taylor (4-1) went 8.0 innings for GC, to allow seven hits for one run. Modine got a strikeout, but gave up a base hit to left field to Zach Murray for a 6-2 game. The Jags couldn’t clear the bases to fall 6-2 in game three.

Warren (3-3) got the loss in 5.1 innings, before Echols came in to get a couple of big strikeouts to end two innings. He recorded four K’s and gave up two hits for two runs.

The Jags host Valdosta State this Wednesday, March 26 for a single non-conference game at 4:00 p.m. in Lake Olmstead Stadium.
