Jan. 11, 2013 SAVANNAH, Ga. – Head Coach Dip Metress and the GRU Augusta Jaguars shot 54 percent from the floor to win their ninth straight and remain perfect in the Peach Belt Conference with an 89-69 victory over the Armstrong Pirates Saturday night in the Alumni Arena.

GRU (12-2, 5-0) scored six unanswered baskets to start the night and went up by 15 at the 7:09 mark with Devon Wright-Nelson’s made jumper. The Jags did not back down on offense to take a 45-24 lead at the break. Armstrong (5-8, 2-4) scored the first four baskets of the second half, but did no real damage as GRU went back up by 23 when they hit the 60-point mark off senior KJ Sherrill’s free throw.

The Pirates owned a 41-29 rebound battle, but lights out shooting from the Jags was way too much to withstand. GRU shot 54.7 percent from the floor, 50 percent from the three-point mark, and 80 percent at the charity stripe.

Four Jaguars hit double-figures led by Devonte Thomas’ season-high 21 points, hitting 5-of-6 from the arc. Wright-Nelson dropped 17 on the Pirates, Ryan Weems notched 12 and Keshun Sherrill 10 with seven assists. Junior-transfer Henry McCarthy tied his GRU career-high with eight points and grabbed four rebounds.

GRU was a point shy of their season-high 90 points they scored on Nov. 9 at home against Tusculum. The Jags 54 percent from the field was their best scoring average of the season and their 50 from the three-point tied their season-best at Lander on Dec. 7.

Eric Eversley paced the Pirates with 14 points while Kenny Bellinger II and Emmanuel Tiluscar added 11 each. GRU continues league play with a PBC contest at Flagler on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
