Dec. 22, 2013 AUGUSTA, GA-- GRU Augusta held off the Mount Olive Trojans Sunday afternoon to win their sixth-consecutive game with a 70-65 final in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
D’Angelo Boyce, Roman Hill, Devon Wright-Nelson, KJ Sherrill, and Ryan Weems started the night for the Jaguars (9-2). It was the eighth different starting lineup for GRU in their first 11 games. Wright-Nelson scored a one-handed high release jumper to put the Jags on the board after the Trojans scored the opening bucket.
The Jags took a one-basket lead off two free throws from Devonte Thomas, but gave up a three-point play to MOC on the next possession. More work at the Jags’ charity stripe and back-to-back buckets from Weems, gave GRU a 20-14 lead into the third media timeout.
The Jags’ Henry McCarthy took a forearm to the face and nailed both free throws before Ronell Crockett drove the lane for a contested score to keep the lead at the half. GRU tied their season-best first half defensive effort by holding MOC to 22 by the break.
The Trojans scored a quick 10 points in the opening five minutes of the second half for a four-point affair. GRU’s Sherrill brothers pushed the lead back to 10 at 46-36 on a Keshun fast-break and a KJ turnaround jumper.A couple of GRU turnovers and a three pointer from MOC’s Ewon Wright made it 51-49.
Dominique Reed tied the contest after he grabbed an offensive rebound and sunk a layup. With 5:00 to go, the Jags had a 58-55 lead. Each team added only one bucket by the 3:30 mark until Keshun Sherrill made two from the charity stripe.
Crockett followed with two of his own, but Brite got to the rim for a 65-63 game with under a minute to play. Wright-Nelson grabbed the rebound from his own missed shot to keep the possession and kill some clock. Weems returned to the free-throw line where the Jags held off MOC for the win.
GRU hit 33-of-46 free throws to MOC’s 15-of-21. Weems led all scorers with 22 points and hit 11 of his 15 free throws. Crockett added 15 points and Wright-Nelson 13, while the Jags shot 43.9 from the field to MOC’s 46.2.Wright-Nelson posted eight rebounds and Crockett had six. Brite led the Trojans with 15 and Dory Hines notched 13.
The Jags return to their home floor on Thursday, Jan. 2 for a Peach Belt Conference game against Francis Marion at 7:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
