Augusta, Ga--The Paine Lions are now practicing in pads as their first year of football in 51 years is underway. Sure it's just a club sport this year but there's certainly a buzz building around a college program in Augusta playing football. Plenty of local kids are on the roster including quarterback Lorenzo Hammond, a former North Augusta star. He's not the only one as this is a work in progress and the kids are hungry to play at another level.
"We're starting to learn the playbook better and pick up on the tempo and as long as we start to progress instead of decrease, we should be good. I'm just ready to show everybody what Augusta's made of" said CJ Welcher
The Lions will play four club games this year with the first one a week from Saturday. All four will be at home with Laney's Memorial Stadium being the site. Tickets are on sale now.
