Home court boosts Lions over Clark Atlanta

Jan. 25, 2014 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Paine College men’s and women’s basketball teams split games against Clark Atlanta on Jan. 25 in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) rivalry match. The Lions (8-9, 4-4) defeated the Panthers (8-7, 4-3) 83-73 while the Lady Panthers (13-4, 6-1) pulled a victory over the Lady Lions (6-11, 4-4) 80-59.

Although the Lady Lions put up the first points of the game and remained close throughout the first half, they were unable to pull out the win. At the half, the team was down 26-38. Paine shot 33 percent from the field, 27 percent from behind the arc and 67 percent from the free throw line. The Lady Panthers shot 43 percent from the field, 40 percent from behind the arc and 70 percent from the line.

Ashley Watts led the Purple and White in scoring with 18 points. Watts also had four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Jemetria Fletcher and Ariel Brown each put up another 10 points. Brown led the team in rebounding with nine defensive rebounds. Clark Atlanta’s Jomanda Smalls and Erika Sumpter led the Lady Panthers with double-doubles. Sumpter had 22 points and 13 rebounds and Smalls had 16 rebounds and 14 points.

The men’s team snapped a three-game losing streak with this win. The Lions started the game on a 9-0 run and held on for an 11-point lead going into halftime. At the half, Paine led 44-33. With a little less than 12 minutes to play, Clark Atlanta tied the game at 49 and then again at 52, 60 and 69. As the game clock showed less than two minutes to play, Jordan Warner hit a layup to give Paine a 71-69 lead going into the final stretch. In the last 30 seconds, Warner pulled down a defensive rebound and the ball made its way to Sean Morgan who dunked the ball on the fast break with 26 seconds to play to seal the deal and send the crowd roaring for the Lions.

Kedric Taylor had 19 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Paine’s next leading scorer was Morgan. Morgan had 15 points, two rebounds and one block. Kenny Fluellen (14) and Warner (13) also scored in double digits. Warner had five rebounds to lead the Lions.

Paine shot 54 percent from the field, 40 percent from behind the arc and 75 percent from the free throw line. The Panthers shot 45 percent from the field, 26 percent from behind the arc and 69 percent from the line. Jarrel Joye was the leading scorer for Clark Atlanta. Joye had 27 points.
