Harlem's Beasley, three other Pacers on Martinez Award watch list

OMAHA, Neb. – Three more University of South Carolina Aiken baseball players have been named to the 2013 Tino Martinez Award Watch List.

The trio of Pacers added to the Watch List are Ty Barkell, Derek Beasley and Bill Gerstenslager. USC Aiken’s Josh Miller was on the original Watch List unveiled in early February.

The Tino Martinez Award is given to the most outstanding player in NCAA Division II baseball at the conclusion of the 2013 season. The annual honor is named after the former University of Tampa Spartan, United States Olympian, First-Round draft pick and MLB All-Star, Tino Martinez.

Initial nominations for the award were made by baseball sports information contacts, coaches and media members. A panel of media, coaches and sports information officers will be polled to finalize the candidates and determine the 2013 winner. A fan Internet vote also contributes to the final vote.

Semifinalists for the 2013 Tino Martinez Award Watch List are scheduled to be announced on May 6, 2013.

Barkell (Denver, Colo./Palmer Ridge HS) is currently hitting .382 (68-for178) on the 2013 season for the Pacers. He has claimed 19 multiple hit games and 11 multiple RBI games. Barkell hit safely in a team-best 23 straight games at one point in the current season.

The USC Aiken first baseman is second in the Peach Belt Conference and first among all Pacers in the 2013 season with eight home runs. He has 24 extra-base hits on the year in 13 doubles, eight home runs and three triples.

The sophomore is second in the Peach Belt Conference and fifth in the nation in total bases (111) currently. Barkell is in the top-10 in the Peach Belt Conference and second on the Pacers with 45 RBIs. He has scored 37 runs.

Beasley (Harlem, Ga./Harlem HS) is a perfect 9-0 on the year on the hill. The nine wins are tied for the most in the Peach Belt Conference. The nine victories are tied for third-best in NCAA Division II.

The junior left-handed pitcher has made 11 appearances in 2013, pitching 60.0 innings. He is leading USC Aiken with 67 strikeouts this season.

Gerstenslager (Solon, Ohio/Mercyhurst) is leading the Pacers and is second in the Peach Belt Conference with a .406 (69-for-170) batting average. He has obtained a team-best 15 multiple RBI games and he is second on the team with 22 multiple hit contests. Gerstenslager had a 20-game hitting streak at one point during the 2013 season.

The Pacer senior designated hitter is second in the Peach Belt Conference and fifth nationally with 19 doubles on the 2013 season. In total, Gerstenslager has a team-best 25 extra-base knocks on 19 doubles and six home runs.

Gerstenslager is leading the Pacers and is in the top-10 in the Peach Belt Conference with 46 RBIs. He has scored 41 runs.

A senior catcher, Miller (Chapin, S.C./Chapin HS) has continued to prove why he was on the initial Watch List in the 2013 season.

Miller is currently hitting .355 (59-for-166) for the Pacers. He has scored 41 runs to go along with his 34 RBIs. Miller has a team second-best 12 steals.

In the field, Miller has 223 putouts and 22 assists. He has 17 extra-base knocks on 14 doubles and three home runs.

Miller has 19 multiple hit games and 11 multiple RBI games thus far in the 2013 season.

The nationally fifth-ranked and Peach Belt Conference-leading Pacers will next close out their week by welcoming Columbus State to Roberto Hernandez Stadium for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 20. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The league series will close with a single 1 p.m. game on Sunday, April 21. Sunday's game will serve as Pack the Park and City of Aiken Baseball Day at the 'Bert.

The weekend series against Columbus State will also serve as USC Aiken baseball Alumni Weekend.
