AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- For the longest time it seemed like Oakland Raider great and Thomson product Ray Guy would never get the call to the hall.
Year after year he'd be nominated, but then disappointed. Guy was bitter at times, and for good reason. That's all changed now with Guy finally getting his due.
The greatest punter of all time was in Augusta Thursday to help out with the Sports Council function this evening. Beforehand, taking some time to answer questions about what it was like to finally be on the receiving end of a phone call from the hall of fame president that's been long overdue.
"He said I want to be the first one to congratulate you to be one of the members of the Class of 2014. I said, you're kidding me, and I asked him three times and all of a sudden my legs give out from under me and I fell back into the chair and all that. So, ever since then, it's been a whirlwind," Guy said.
Guy was emotional and knows he'll likely be that way when he's in Canton, Ohio at the end of August when he dons the gold blazer as a Hall of Fame member.
