AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Paced by strong collegiate debuts from its three freshmen, the GRU Augusta Women’s Golf squad tipped off the 2013-14 season Tuesday with a fourth-place finish in the Minnesota Invitational at The Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, Minn.
With senior Casey Kennedy slowed by a sore back, the Jaguars recorded their best round of the tournament with a 304 and finished with a 54-hole total of 922 (+58). Jessica Haigwood (t8th) shot a 2-over 74, Eunice Yi (t6th) netted a 3-over 75 and Josefine Nyqvist (t18th) notched a 4-over 76 in their respective collegiate debuts. Sophomore Stephanie Bennett tied for 51st following a 79 and Kennedy signed for an 80. The Jaguar newcomers combined for nine birdies on the day, including four from Haigwood.
Kent State rallied from five shots down to claim a one-stroke victory over Illinois. Tourney host Minnesota was third, followed by the Jags and San Diego State in a tie for fourth. Kent State’s Jennifer Ha made it a clean sweep for the Golden Flashes when she rattled off six birdies and an eagle for a 4-under 68 and a seven-shot victory over Stephanie Miller of Illinois.
The tournament was contested at The Minikahda Club, previous host site of the 1916 U.S. Open, the 1927 U.S. Amateur, the 1957 Walker Cup, the 1988 U.S. Women’s Amateur and the 1998 Curtis Cup. The Golden Gophers are hosting the event for the first time since 2005.
The Jags were making their first appearance in the Minnesota Invitational, were paired with Nebraska and Illinois for 36 holes on Monday. The Jags’ lineup had a decidedly new look, with three freshmen -- Haigwood, Nyqvist and Yi -- qualifying for the squad’s first event, along with senior All-American candidate Kennedy and sophomore Bennett.
