Augusta, Ga--Usually when we select our academy sports and outdoors player of the week, we try to shy away from the same person twice. But when you do what Aquinas junior Ruben Garnett did Friday, it really was a no brainer that we had to go back to Highland Avenue.
For the first time in 33 years, the Irish knocked off Lincoln County and they did it in impressive fashion. Garnett stole the show. Running behind a line that keeps getting better, he carried the ball an astounding 41 times for 284 yards and four total touchdowns. He also caught a handful of passes and actually touched the ball two -thirds of the time Aquinas snapped it. Yea, feed the hot hand when you have one.
"I don't know how you prepare for that." said Ruben Garnett "I wasn't expecting that. That was not our game plan going in but I guess they say if you can't stop it, why change it so we kept running it"
"We knew we were going to have to give Ruben the ball a lot, we didn't think it would be that much" said James Leonard "But the way the line was blocking and John Morris was blocking at the fullback position, we had a good thing going so we didn't want to stop."
It helped they were able to push the Red Devils around up front and open the holes, and Garnett just took advantage like he has all year. His performance this year is also getting him noticed more by some big time programs across the nation.
