Gamecocks ready to reach new heights in 2012

Sunday, August 5, 2012

Columbia, SC -- The story is a familiar one for Steve Spurrier. Just about every time his Gamecocks reach a new milestone on the football field, the Head Ball Coach likes to point out that most said he could never win in Columbia, not in the SEC, and not at a national level.

It's kind of comical to think of now. South Carolina has been gradually improving throughout his seven years at the helm, finally winning the SEC East two years ago and then getting a school record eleven wins last year.

These feats aren't the summit, though. They're merely a high water mark Spurrier and his team are happy to chase yet again.

Spurrier said, "I came out of the Doty, the cafeteria, yesterday, and one of the guys I think that works on campus or something said, 'Hey Coach, are we going to have a winning record this year?' I said, 'Winning record?' I said, 'Our goals have gone a little bit past winning record."

Redshirt sophomore offensive lineman A.J. Cann added, "Coach Spurrier always says to not make expectations. He just wants us to get better everyday. That's what he looks forward to, getting better everyday. We break it down on who's going to get better this day, the next day. That's what we look forward to, just getting better."

A few locals are sprinkled throughout this Gamecocks roster.

A.J. Cann is key among those. He was a freshman All-America a year ago out of Bamberg-Ehrhardt.
