KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- The GRU Augusta Women’s Golf squad carded its low round of the tournament Monday in the third and final round of the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Turtle Point Golf Course.
The 47th-ranked Jaguars, who were in third place following the opening round Sunday before slipping to seventh, turned in the fourth-best round of the day and finished in fourth place among the 19-team field. With the finish, the Jags finished fifth or better in all four fall events in 2013.
Freshman Jessica Haigwood paced GRU for the second straight day, booking an even-par 72 that included an early double bogey and back-to-back birdies late in her round. Haigwood’s 54-hole total of even-par 216 gave her a tie for second in the 99-player field. Jags’ senior Casey Kennedy matched Haigwood for the day’s low round with a 72 of her own and tied for 26th. Freshman Eunice Yi had a 73 and was 33rd, freshman Josefine Nyqvist tied for 40th following a 75 and Shannon Pak was 98th. Senior Christine Duschek-Hansen competed as an individual and finished 96th.
Kansas, ranked 39th in the nation, claimed a three-stroke victory over Georgia State and East Tennessee State took third. The Jags were fourth, just two shots back of the Buccaneers, and tourney host College of Charleston and Illinois tied for fifth, one shot back of GRU. Georgia State’s Melissa Siviter, who began the final round in fifth place, fired a 5-under 67 and posted a two-shot victory over Haigwood and Laura Fuenfstueck of College of Charleston.
