GRU Augusta women lead on the links

JOHN’S ISLAND, S.C. – GRU Augusta sits all alone at number one after the opening round of play at the Briar’s Creek Invitational in the 17-team field event at the Golf Club at Briar’s Creek.

Hosted by College of Charleston, the Briar’s Creek Invitational saw an opening 36 holes of play with the Jaguars jumping to the top of the leaderboard with a team score of 596 (+20). East Carolina sits second at 600, Clemson third with 601, and Texas Tech (602) and East Tennessee State (603) hold on at fourth and fifth.

Josefine Nyqvist led the Jags and is tied for eighth overall after shooting a 1-over 73 in the second round. In the first round, freshman Eunice Yi started on hole seven and went on to birdy No. 15 and 17 to lead the Jags with a 5-over 77. Yi signed for a 72 for her second outing where she birdied back-to-back holes to sit tied for 10th with senior Casey Kennedy.

Freshman Jessica Haigwood shot the lowest score for GRU Augusta in the opening round with a 1-over 73. She carded a 5-over 77 in the second round to sit tied for 19th. Kennedy and Nygvist each shot a 3-over 75 in round one with both recording three birdies. Senior Christine Duschek-Hansen shot an 8-over 80 after the first 18 and carded an 87 in the second.
