GRU Augusta men pull away in the second half for road win, women fall to Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Jaguars blew open a close second-half game at Lander to shoot 60 percent from the field and runaway with an 80-63 Peach Belt Conference victory in Horne Arena.

GRU (21-4, 14-2 PBC) had five players with double figure points, highlighted by senior Ryan Weems’ 19. Junior Devonte Thomas hit four 3-pointers as he totaled 14, freshman Keshun Sherrill dealt seven assists and scored 12 points while seniors Harold Doby (11 points, six rebounds) and KJ Sherrill, the PBC Basketball Player pf the Week, (10 points) did work in the paint. The Jags scored 28 points in the paint and out-rebounded the Bearcats 26-to-23.

LU (15-5, 9-7 PBC) played its third game in five day, but JR Washington kept his team close within four points with a quick scoring spurt midway through the opening half, but the Jags weren’t done. GRU’s 67 percent shooting in the second half was too much too withstand as the team pushed their lead to the end after the Bearcats made it a 10-point game.

Thomas hit a 3-pointer to give the Jaguars their biggest lead at 17 points, 65-48, with 8:08 left. The lead grew to 20 points, 70-50, on D'Angelo Boyce's fast-break layup with 7:11 to go. Washington lead LU – hitting seven of nine shots including five of six 3-point attempts for 19 points, while Darius Carrier added 10 points on four or five shooting.

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Jaguars let a halftime lead expire at Lander on Wednesday night to drop a Peach Belt Conference game 71-57 after the Bearcats went on a 15-0 run in the second for the comeback win in Horne Arena.

The Jaguars (9-14, 5-11 PBC) dropped their seventh straight after going on a 5-0 run to start the game from senior Brooke McCants’ layup and Lonna Turner’s 3-pointer. Lander (11-14, 6-10 PBC) left Becky Newhouse open who nailed a 3-pointer for a 12-3 GRU lead with 16:13 left in the first half.

The Lady Bearcats went on a 12-3 run of their own over the next six-plus minutes to tie the game at 15, but steady offense gave the Jags a 31-25 halftime advantage. GRU scored the opening basket of the second half for a 33-25 lead, but the Lady Bearcats scored 13 unanswered points to take their first lead of the game. Kayla West scored twice, Portia McCray hit a layup, Ty’hesha Reynolds made a layup and Alexis Armstrong added a steal and driving layup. Reynolds nailed a 3-pointer to give Lander a 38-33 lead with 15:34 left.

The Bearcats outscored the Jags 28-10 after the first 12 minutes of the second half to lead 53-41 and eventually take a 71-57 final.

J’ Ashby led GRU with 15 points, Brooke McCants added 10 points, and Lonna Turner led the Jaguars with 12 rebounds. Ashby added eight rebounds for the Jags. GRU outrebounded Lander 47-to-39, but only shot 32.8 percent from the field to the Bearcats’ 40.4 percent.
