Augusta, Ga--A year ago, GRU Augusta cross country runner Jaiden Brandt made school history, becoming the first Jaguar runner to take part in nationals. This year, the program upped the ante with the entire team qualifying.
This team is led by a couple of talented seniors, Brandt, and Dustin Ross. Just missing out a year ago really set the stage for this year. Add some underclassmen, who saw how hard this team works, and it was the recepice for a trip to the state of washington to compete on the biggest stage.
"Even though we just started the program in 2010, the guys always wanted to go to Nationals" said Adam Ward "I think that it's one of the things I've always appreciated about it, they've never wavered from wanting to accomplish that and I think last year just cemented it even more that that's what they wanted to accomplish"
"It's an awesome opportunity, it's one of the reasons why I came here coming out of high school" said Nick Del Guercio "I knew we were going to have a shot to not just win conference but to go to nationals and we did both of those this year"
The Jags will be one of 32 and as coach Ward said, anything can happen at this point in time and the program is hoping to leave a lasting impression saying they can compete on the national stage.
