AUGUSTA, Ga. – GRU Augusta outlasted Georgia Southwestern on Saturday afternoon to hold on to a 78-65 Peach Belt Conference victory in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The Jags (19-4, 12-2) and the Hurricanes (18-7, 10-6) grappled over the lead during the first few minutes of the game, but the Jags prevailed with Ronell Crockett hitting a fast-break layup with 12:00 to go in the first half to put GRU on top 13-8. The Jags went into the half with a 20-point lead – shooting 51.5 percent from the field in the first half.
The second half opened with senior KJ Sherrill knocking down a deep jumper for a 42-25 score. The big man finished with 14 points and five assists, shooting 6-of-10 from the floor. His little brother, freshman Keshun Sherrill sunk a high-release floater to break the 50-point mark and push the lead to 20. The majority of the second half saw a 20-point contest, with GSW’s Johathon Brooks and Daryl Davis keeping the Canes afloat.
Brooks and Davis each posted 21 points, while Alan Arnett finished with 14. The Jags used their possessions under three minutes to drain the clock, which let GSW back into the contest. The Hurricanes picked up speed during the final five minutes of the game, with a score of 68-58, but GRU grabbed two offensive rebounds under two minutes – forcing GSW to foul.
The Hurricanes gained on the Jags, falling just 10 points behind until KJ Sherrill scored two for the Jags to end the GSW run. A couple of offensive rebounds gave Jags the advantage where they held on for the win. Ryan Weems scored 20 points to lead GRU, followed by 14 points each by KJ Sherrill and Keshun Sherrill.
The Jags will host Columbus State for a 4:00 p.m. PBC matchup tomorrow, Sunday Feb. 16.
