OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 32 GRU Augusta Women’s Golf team sits all alone at No. 1 after the first day of play at the sixth annual Rebel Intercollegiate (April 4-6) at the Ole Miss Golf Course Friday.
Host institution Ole Miss welcomed 17 teams to Oxford for the three-day event, starting with Friday’s opening round where the Jaguars currently lead the entire field by six strokes with a 286 (-2) on the par-72 course.
Jaguar senior Casey Kennedy is tied for first individually with her 2-under 70. Kennedy started her first round with back-to-back bogeys, but found life when she made the turn – carding birdies on No. 17, one and two. One more birdie on the par-five No. 7 ended her day sharing first place with four other competitors
Freshman Jessica Haigwood was close behind Kennedy with a 1-under 71, currently tied for sixth overall. Freshmen Josefine Nyqvist and Eunice Yi finished one stroke within each other with Nyqvist (T11) shooting an even-par 72 and Yi (T15) a 1-over 73. Nyqvist carded and eagle on the par-five No. 2 and signed for consecutive birdies on No. 8 and No. 9. Senior Christine Duschek-Hansen also controlled the par-five No. 2, taking a birdie to finish at 76 (+4) to tie for 46th.
Defending champions Coastal Carolina are tied for second with East Tennessee State, while Texas sits at No. 4 and Tulane, Harvard, and Kennesaw State are knotted at fifth.
