Feb. 22, 2014 FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion Patriots lead by as much 19 to upset the visiting GRU Augusta Jaguars and take a 94-86 Peach Belt Conference final Saturday afternoon in the Smith University Center.
The Jaguars (21-5, 14-3) were led by freshman Keshun Sherrill’s career-high 22 points. The youngest Sherrill brother shot 7-of-16 from the floor and made six of his seven free throws. Three other Jags reached double-figure points with senior Ryan Weems tallying 14 and sophomore Devon Wright-Nelson and senior KJ Sherrill each putting up 12. It wasn’t enough to withstand FMU’s Evrik Gary who paced all scorers with 34 points – making 15-of-17 free throws in front of his home crowd for homecoming.
FMU (10-14, 7-11) shot 39 free throws in the game 25 from GRU, finishing the night with 87.2 percent from the charity stripe to the Jags’ 76.0. Gary started off the game with a 3-pointer as he sparked his team into a big first half lead. They went into the break up by seven and never let go of the lead as they shot over 50 percent from the floor.
FMU was up by 13 with just under two minutes to play when the Jags cut it six off a few turnovers. The clock was too far gone as the Pats outlasted the Jags for the upset victory. FMU had three more turnovers than GRU, but were able to block six shots and get to the free-throw line where the beat the Jaguars.
GRU hosts rival USC Aiken this Wednesday, Feb. 26 for a 7:30 p.m. PBC start in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jaguars look for their second win this season against the nationally ranked and Southeast Region leading Pacers.
