Fifth-ranked Pacers maul Cougars, 19-4

AIKEN, S.C. – Before a record crowd on “Pack the Park” day at Roberto Hernandez Stadium, the nationally fifth-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team claimed a dominating 19-4 win over Peach Belt Conference foe Columbus State on Sunday afternoon.

The victory allows the Peach Belt Conference-leading Pacers to move to 21-6 in league play this season. The Pacers now need just one more victory to guarantee an outright Peach Belt Conference championship.

Columbus State (25-18, 17-9 PBC) opened the game Sunday with two runs in the top of the first inning.

From there, it would be all Pacers as USC Aiken posted 19 of the next 21 runs in the game. USC Aiken scored in six of its eight team at-bats. They posted four runs each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

USC Aiken (37-9, 21-6 PBC) closed out the victory over Columbus State out-hitting the Cougars, 18-11. Nine Pacers had an RBI in the game.

Tyler Moore (Evans, Ga./Evans HS) led five Pacers with multiple hits with four. Moore was 4-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the resounding Pacer victory.

USC Aiken’s Ryan Metzler (Glen Burnie, Md./Siena) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI in the game, while JJ Loker (Elkton, Va./Spotswood HS) scored three runs and drove in another to go along with a 2-for-3 performance at the dish.

Bryce Baur (Moncks Corner, S.C./Florence-Darlington Tech) and Branden Millhouse (Summerville, S.C./USC Upstate) were the final Pacers with multiple hits as each had two. Baur scored twice and Millhouse drove in two, while scoring two.

Martin Castro led Columbus State in its loss with three hits.

USC Aiken starting pitcher Ryan Milewski (West Boylston, Mass./West Boylston HS) obtained the win on the hill. Milewski (5-3) dealt six innings, fanning three.

Columbus State starter Jake Ezell pitched the first 4.2 innings in his loss. He is now 2-3 on the year.

USC Aiken has now claimed 10 of its 12 three-game series this season (Lincoln Memorial, Carson-Newman, Shepherd, Francis Marion, Flagler, Young Harris, North Georgia, Augusta State, Lander and Columbus State). The Pacers swept Lincoln Memorial, Shepherd, Flagler, Young Harris, North Georgia, Augusta State and Lander.

USC Aiken won all of its home three-game series in the 2013 regular-season.

USC Aiken will next close out the two-game 2013 Outback Cup against rival Augusta State at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

USC Aiken claimed game No. 1 of the 2013 Outback Cup with a 4-1 10-inning victory over Augusta State on Wednesday, March 27.

USC Aiken is 8-1 all-time in Outback Cup games.

The second game of the 2013 Outback Cup will serve as Senior Day for the Pacers. The game is also the home regular-season finale for USC Aiken.
