KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Nationally 12th-ranked North Alabama leads the fifth-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken men’s golf team by just one stroke after the first round of play at the Ninth Annual Kiawah Island Invitational at the 6,875-yard, par-72 Cougar Point Golf Course.
North Alabama closed out the opening round of action owning an 8-under score of 280 as a team. The Pacers are one back at 7-under 281. Erskine is in third after round one at 5-under 283.
North Alabama senior Ricky Stimets posted the round of the day on Monday, carding a 6-under 66. Three players are currently tied for second (Chris Fuga, Chandler Gruenemeier and Ford Blanchard) behind Stimets at 68.
All four scoring Pacers in Monday’s inaugural round finished under par with Andrew Ward (York, S.C./Clover HS), Matt Atkins (Owensboro, Ky./Henderson State) and JP Solis (Morelia, Mexico/Lico Morelia) all posting 2-under 70s. USC Aiken’s Hayden Letien (Sumter, S.C./Sumter HS) carded a 1-under 71.
The second and final round of the Ninth Annual Kiawah Island Invitational is scheduled to get underway at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
The first Pacer is slated to tee off at 11:30 a.m.
