Augusta, Ga--A Year ago the ladies of Cross Creek finished the year with a 21 and 8 record. By most accounts a good season. Five of those losses happened in the last two and a half weeks of the season. This years squad is a year older and a year wiser and a whole lot better.
How much better? Well, they are perfect, 25 and 0 after last night's region tournament win. They were all pretty much underclassmen a season ago and have learned a lot. Like how to trust each other and how to deal with adversity. No question they learned plenty in 12 months.
"We just had to get that connection first an then we learned we could play with each other and trust each other, we just had to trust each other." said Ashley Outler
"We were so close, we lost to Sandy Creek in overtime last year and they were a number one seed and we were number four seed so they know again that it's there and they're just waiting to do it " said Kim Schlein
Things couldn't have gone much better this year with thier closest game, an eight point ballgame against a 6-A foe to start the year. Really haven't been challenged since averging 63 points a ballgame. They're just having fun and enjoying the ride and hope add a banner to a gym that's missing one for girls basketball
"We'll be the first girls to do it so I mean that's just a great feeling itself" said Briana "I love these girls, they're my heart so I mean playing with them it's like playing with my sisters."
"I don't know, this team is just special" added coach Schlein "They're special. They work hard, they have fun together, and you just can't explain it, it's just a feeling they love what they do"
Cross Creek takes on hephzibah for a third time Thursday night in Statesboro in the region semifinals. A win would lock up at least one home game in the playoffs, but this team is thinking a whole lot more
