COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) -- A newly-formed committee at Columbus State University is considering expanding the school's athletic program and moving its teams to NCAA Division I.

The Ledger-Enquirer of Columbus reports part of expanding the athletic program at Columbus State University could include creating a football team.

The university has a club football team that competes against club or junior varsity teams from other universities. The team is recreational and is not affiliated with the school's athletic department.

The newspaper reports a marketing firm based in Tuscaloosa, Ala. is working with the university to analyze possible costs, benefits and drawbacks of expanding the athletic program.

Columbus State University competes in 13 sports in the Peach Belt Conference, which includes 14 schools in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina.
