Aiken, SC--He's been one of the dean of high school coaches in the area, but now Carey Johnson has decided to step down and resign as head coach of the Aiken Hornets. All told he spent 18 years on the sideline and will turn the reigns over to a new coach.
During his tenure with the Hornets, Johnson amassed a 135 and 88 career record including 13 playoff appearances. The last few seasons have been tough though and are coming off a 2 and 9 year. The highlight of his tenure was back in 200 when they lost to Greenwood in the state title game.
Aiken principal Garen Cofer said they tried just about everything to get Johnson to stay but he wouldn't. He will remain as the schools athletic director and right after spring break the search for a new coach for the hornets will begin.
