Augusta, Ga--It was a year of first for the Aquinas Fighting Irish. Among them, winning their first ever playoff football game. They're hoping there are a few more firsts when the Irish tee it up this year.
Everything will ractch up a notch or two as aquias is looking at a big run into the playoffs. They have the skill guys starting and ending with Brendan Douglas, but may be a work in progress with their offensive line. But for sure there's a different swagger this year, something aquinas has never had.
"Well I think the expectations are a little higher" said coach Matt LeZotte " But I think our work ethic is higher. I'm thinking our guys are wanting to do more on top of what we're already doing to try to be the best that they can be. I'm hoping they continue to do that."
"It was a great experience last year, you know making it to the quarterfinals and it definitely gives us some drive this year to go even further if possible. Just work hard and try to do what we did last year and maybe even more"
Of course all eyes will be on Douglas, the hardest worker on the squad. How does he back up a year in which he was dominant on both sides of the ball? He goes out and gets better by working on speed and agility. 120 tackels on defense, 27 touchdowns and1600 yards rushing. Sure teams are going to key on him, but nobody's stopped him yet.
"We are going to try to spread it a little bit but when you have one of the best players in the state on your team you're going to give the ball to him. A wise man once said if you a quarterback that can throw the ball, you're going to throw the ball, if you have a running back that can run the ball, run it, we got a running back that can run it so we're going to run the ball." said coach LeZotte
Ruben Garnett will join him in the backfield to spell him every now and then, just don't expect it to be much. Matt LeZotte said for his team to make a bigger push towards a state title, they need to be more physical, something they are working on and will continue to work on as the season moves along.
