Augusta, Ga--Back in the day Arnold Schwarzenegger was the fixture of body building. A male dominated sport where it was nearly frowned upon for women. That's not the case anymore. Despite the late start age wise, Carol Townsend is showing the hard work can pay off in a big way.
"Everybody has an idea of what fit is, and this is my idea" said Carol Townsend "This is what makes me feel good and like I said, I'm going to be 43 next month and I can cross it off my bucket list."
For Carol Townsend, the bucket list included a body building competition. Six months ago, at the age of 42, she nearly won the first one she entered.
"i've really enjoyed this past six months, i found it very challenging, not only physically, but mentally as well, so next year i plan on doing it again. And next year i want to go for more of a physque look".
Townsend was always physically fit, but bad knees meant she needed a change. After reading an article in the paper, that light bulb went off and she started to hit the weights. Townsend also wanted to change her image
"We're all insecure about ourselves in different areas and you know, i'm not getting any younger and i might as well change now" added Townsend
With no real coach to help her, she relies on the mirror and two daughters to make sure her poses are just right. And she's got to remember to smile.
"it's very tough, because you're holding poses and trying to smile and trying to breathe all at the same time, it's very difficult."
She's got that down now.
"Was the toughest thing, wounldn't say gotten over it, but better at it."
Townsend will compete in the novice and masters division, her goal, of course
"i"m a little competitve so i always aim for first, but just to get up on stage, i can feel good about myself knowing that i did it"
Carol has a nutritionist that pretty much tells her what she can and how much. You'd be surprised on how every carb or protine can effect the body, and everyone's different. Townsend did say she can't wait til after the competition for that scoop of peanut butter and a cheat day.
