AIKEN, S.C. – The nationally 16th-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken women’s basketball team was upset, 53-49, by Peach Belt Conference foe Armstrong on Saturday evening at the Convocation Center.
The loss drops USC Aiken (19-5, 12-5 PBC) into a tie with Augusta State (19-5, 12-5 PBC) for first place in the Peach Belt Conference East Division. USC Aiken and Augusta State will face off next on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the Convocation Center.
USC Aiken opened the game by leading by as many as seven in the opening minutes of the first half. Armstrong would then take a 21-19 lead into intermission.
Armstrong (11-13, 6-11 PBC) narrowly outscored the Pacers, 32-30, in the second half.
USC Aiken finished its loss shooting 40.4 percent (21-for-52) as a team. The Pacers hit just 20 percent (2-for-10) of their 3-point attempts as a team. The Pacers connected on 55.6 percent (5-for-9) of their free throw attempts in the game.
Armstrong closed out its win over the Pacers shooting 47.7 percent (21-for-44) as a team. The Pirates knocked down 44.4 percent (4-for-9) of their 3-point attempts as a team. Armstrong shot 53.8 percent (7-for-13) as a team at the charity stripe.
Brittany Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./Quinnipiac) led USC Aiken in the game with a team-best 15 points. She also had five assists, four rebounds and four steals.
Tiffani Moody (Raleigh, N.C./Ohio Valley University) claimed a team-high seven rebounds in the contest. She also had six points, three assists, three blocks and one steal.
Armstrong’s Mauri Wells led all scorers in the game with 16 points. She also had 12 boards to acquire a double-double.
The USC Aiken-Augusta State Peach Belt Conference East Division showdown is part of a doubleheader at the Convocation Center on Wednesday, Feb. 27. It will be Senior Day at the Convocation Center.
The women’s game is set to commence at 5:30 p.m. The men’s game will tip-off after the conclusion of the women’s contest at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The USC Aiken athletic department is asking Pacer fans to wear Cardinal and/or Navy Pacer shirts in support of USC Aiken that evening.
The rivalry game is being sponsored by Master Chevrolet, Aiken Staffing and the Chandler Law Offices.
The evening will feature one of the biggest promotions in the history of the Convocation Center with Master Chevrolet offering one lucky fan a chance to win a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze during the men’s halftime. The lucky fan will have to knock down a shot from half-court to claim the car.
The USC Aiken-Augusta State doubleheader will be Faculty Staff Appreciation Night at the Convocation Center. The Pacer dance team will also give another special performance over the course of the evening.
During the final regular-season doubleheader of the year, the USC Aiken advancement office will also be raising money for the endowed scholarships for fallen Aiken Department of Public Safety Officers Scotty Richardson and Sandy Rogers. The Sandy Rogers and Scotty Richardson Memorial Scholarship will go to a USC Aiken student majoring in sociology.
During the first media time out after the 15-minute mark of the men’s basketball game, a bucket will be passed around for individuals to donate to this worthy cause.
