Aiken, SC--In the next couple of weeks, they'll be handing out state title on the track and field front. Georgia starts things off this weekend with South Carolina next week. While they don't get a lot of notice, one of the top triple jumpers in the nation calls Aiken home.
Natasha Dicks may be more known for her success on the volleyball courts, but she already has two state titles in the triple jump, and her personal best of over 41 feet is one of the tops in the nation. Despite her success, Dicks has doubts about her ability at times. They've been trying to do away with that mentality.
"For some reason my coach says I have a cloud in my mind, and I start to doubt myself a lot." said Natasha Dicks "I'm like maybe I'm not cut out for this, maybe this isn't what I'm suppose to do , and I've been working on my mentality a lot more to the point where I just push that away and I focus on just doing whatever they say"
The triple jump comes easy, the long jump, not so easy. This past summer she did win both at the prestegious Taco Bell Classic. A lot of it had to do with the competition she was facing.
"The girl that beat me was there and I'm not going to lie, I wasn't focused on jumping far, I was focused on where she was and me beating her. So if she jumped 15 (feet), I was like, I'm going to jump four more feet then her, and I did, I jumped 19-3"
Dicks is following in the footsteps of her sisters as far as track and field goes. But does say volleyball is actually her first love. Next year, it's all track up the road in Columbia with the Gamecocks. She still striving for 45 feet and don't be surprised if she gets there.
