AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- In a command performance by both horse and rider, Palace Malice won the 145th Belmont Stakes Saturday for Aiken's Dogwood Stable.

Starting from the 12th post, the 3-year-old colt avoided the breakneck pace that wore him down in the Kentucky Derby. Instead, Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith sent him toward the front, just off the pace set by Preakness winner, Oxbow.

Shortly before the final stretch run, Palace Malice kicked to the front of the pack, outlasting the rest of the field for the win. He covered the 1 1/2 miles in 2:30.70.

The Belmont win is the first ever for Dogwood Stable and 85-year-old owner Cot Campbell. The Stable has one Preakness win (1990 with Summer Squall) and a 2nd, 3rd and 4th at the Kentucky Derby.

It's the second Belmont win for trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey Mike Smith.

Ever since arriving at Belmont Park, Palace Malice was getting glowing reviews for his work outs, and Campbell said removing the colt's blinkers would keep him from going speed crazy like he did in the Kentucky Derby.

This is the second win of the horse's career and first during his 3-year-old campaign.

Palace Malice was sent off at odds of 13-1 and returned $29.60, $11.20 and $6.70.
