AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State junior point guard Tanchelle Hollingsworth notched a career-high 19 points and senior forward Tiffany Jaecks registered her first double-double of the season as the Lady Jaguars outlasted Clark Atlanta, 62-57, Monday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The victory lifted ASU to 7-0 -- its best start in 16 years -- while Clark Atlanta dropped to 3-6 overall. With the win, the Lady Jags matched their longest winning streak (seven) since the 2006-07 season.
Hollingsworth canned five 3-pointers and shot 5-of-7 from the line, while pacing the team with five assists. Jaecks scored 11 points and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds, while Jemimah Ashby contributed 12 points and senior Brittany White nabbed a game-high four steals.
Clark Atlanta was led by junior guard Conisha Hicks’ 15 points, while sophomore Denissea Law and junior Jomanda Smalls recorded 12 points each. Freshman guard Nekia Sockwell had a game-high six assists.
The Lady Jaguars opened the contest with an 11-0 run on eight points by Hollingsworth, who canned two from behind the arc and two from the charity stripe. The Lady Panthers fought back, staying close to ASU the last half of the period. CAU claimed the lead, 29-28, on a layup by Smalls with 1:21 remaining in the half. The Lady Jags tied the game with 2.4 seconds left in the half on a Jaecks’ free throw to knot the game at 29-all.
The game stayed close through the second half, with neither team claiming more than a three-point advantage, until the Lady Panthers capitalized on two ASU turnovers to grab a 51-45 lead with 5:58 left in the game. Hollingsworth drained a 3-pointer at the 5:01 mark to pull the Lady Jags back within three. She then canned her fifth trey at 2:45 to reclaim the lead, 53-52. Senior center Taylor Ayers sparked the Lady Jags over the last four minutes with a block and two layups, while White canned four free throws in the last 25 seconds to seal the victory
