ASU sitting eighth at Lady Buckeye Invite

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Augusta State battled 30-mph winds and snow flurries to card rounds of 311 and 315 Saturday on day one of the 33rd Annual Lady Buckeye Invitational at The Ohio State University Golf Club's vaunted Scarlet Course.

Playing in their last event of the regular season, the Lady Jaguars finished the day in eighth place among a 12-team field that includes nine teams from the Big Ten Conference. ASU stood fifth after the opening round and was only four shots back of 18-holer leader Penn State.

Senior Natalie Wille paced the Lady Jags with rounds of 75-79 and at 10-over 154, is tied for 13th individually. Junior Casey Kennedy (79-77) is tied for 22nd at 12-over 156, while senior Julia Stalbro (78-79) is tied for 31st 13-over 157 and junior Christine Duschek-Hansen (79-80) is tied for 41st 15-over 159. Senior Marit Bjerke (80-82) and redshirt freshman Stephanie Bennett (83-84) are 51st and 59th, respectively. Junior Shannon Pak, playing as an individual, is tied for 45th after rounds of 79-81.

Purdue, the highest-ranked team in the field, posted the afternoon's low round with a 295 (+7) and took a one-stroke lead over No. 27 Michigan State. Northwestern is third and only two shots off the pace, while Ohio State and Wisconsin round out the top five.

Laura Gonzalez of Purdue grabbed the individual lead with a pair of 1-over 73's. She will take a two-shot advantage into Sunday's third and final round over Michigan State's Liz Nagel and Northwestern's Elizabeth Szokol.

The field includes ASU, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Kent State, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue, Penn State, Wisconsin and Youngstown State.
