ASU golfers finish 13th in Illinois

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Augusta State posted a 301 Tuesday during the final round of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club’s South Course just outside Chicago.

Sophomore Cody Shafer registered the Jaguars’ best finish with a tie for 23rd. He carded a 3-over 73 for the third straight day and turned in the best finish of his career to date with a 9-over 219. Senior Derek Chang tied for 32nd at 13-over 223 (75-72-76). ASU junior Alex Wennstam was a shot behind, tying for 37th at 14-over 224 (78-72-74). Sophomore Robin Petersson tied for 56th at 19-over 229 (79-72-78) and freshman Meechai Padung tied for 68th at 236 (83-72-81).

The Jags settled for 13th in the 14-team field, which included six teams ranked in the top 24. Arkansas, the top-ranked team in the field, cruised to a 13-shot victory over Florida. Florida State, Duke and Stanford rounded out the top five and tournament host Illinois tied for 10th.

With a 3-under 67, Stanford All-American Patrick Rodgers came from three strokes back and claimed a five-shot win over a pack of five players.

The tourney field included eighth-ranked Arkansas, No. 11 Stanford, No. 12 Florida, No. 16 Florida State, No. 21 Duke and No. 24 Clemson.
