AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A big blow to the Augusta State basketball season just as the season really gets cranking in conference play.
Laney product and star Harold Doby was arrested Wednesday night, and he's facing a charge of having a weapon on school property.
Officers were initially called to the apartment for a drug complaint. A maintenance worker at University Village called police after he saw a marijuana grinder inside the apartment while he was there to replace a light bulb.
When officers got to the apartment, they were let in by Dorian Sabb, who was visiting. He eventually told officers that he had put marijuana under the bed sheets in Doby's room. Sabb was cited for possession of marijuana.
Officers then searched the rest of the apartment after getting permission from residents, which is is when they found a .38-caliber Colt revolver inside a white sock in between the box spring and mattress in Doby's room. Doby was charged with possession of a firearm on school property.
Georgia Regents University Augusta released the following statement, "The arrest of Harold Doby is a pending criminal matter. He has been suspended from the team indefinitely, pending investigation. The institution will investigate this matter for potential violations to the university’s student code of conduct and will continue to partner with investigating agencies to resolve this matter. The safety and security of our students is our top priority, and we will continue to take all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of our campus community. There will be no further comment at this time."
Doby is currently the second leading scorer and rebounder on the team, averaging just under 12 points a ballgame. You may remember Doby transferred in a season ago and has made an immediate impact.
