Augusta, Ga--The Academy of Richmond County is one of the oldest schools in the country. Yet this past Friday, folks at their football game saw something they've never seen before. It's the reason we've selected CJ Welcher as our Academy Sports and Outdoors player of the week.
When the final whistle sounded, welcher had 338 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. That mark is the third most in Georiga football history. When Butler kept scoring, so too did Welcher. The senior has been capable of having one of those games and with the help of the big guys up front, friday was that game.
"Last year, my junior year, the most touchdowns I had in one game was four" said CJ Welcher "So to get seven it jsut feels like a big accomplishment and I'd just like to thank my offensive line, my receivers and everybody that helped make that happen."
It was one of those that you never see, you hope to see, but you don't even think about it when it's going on" said Chris Hughes "We just kept giving him teh ball, the holes kept opening up and he just kept running. It was a tremendous display by him and the offensive line."
After getting hurt last year, welcher has played with a little more purpose this season. Coach Hughes was worried about the number of carries and hits he took, but they needed him in posting the big region win.
