AUGUSTA---The Augusta Southern Nationals is a thrilling event that left many people with chills Sunday.

The crowd screamed in horror.

"All you do is think," said competitor John Haas. "I hope the guy is alright. I know Kent pretty well."

Kansas drag boat racer Kent Price managed to eject moments before his boat split in half at speeds of more than 160 miles per hour.

"This is kind of a dangerous sport," said John. "That kinda goes along with it. I've been out there myself a couple of times."

Fellow racers say Kent took a similar spill back in September.

"And he was back by November or so," said John. "This ain't going to stop him...I don't believe."

Fast acting rescue crews were on the scene within minutes, but it's a standard safety tube that may have saved Kent's life.

"The sport has gotten a lot safer than it used to be," said race chairman Dayton Sherrouse who plans to review the video. "Look at everything that went right and wrong and try to make whatever improvements we can for next year's race."

It's that dedication to safety that keeps fans and racers coming back each year.

"They treat us like kings when we are here," said John. "You can't get a better place to race than Augusta."

John knows things can always take a drastic turn.

"It's kinda like falling over on a motorcylce," said John. "You just gotta get up, and go again."

Price was taken to MCG Hospital with a possible broken leg. News 12 thanks event organizers for sharing the accident video with us.
