There were no fireworks or explosions down on the Savannah River today. The rumbling, earth shaking noises were just drag boats doing qualifying runs at the Southern Nationals.

For fans, the racing looks easy, and the drivers seem unflappable. But that's not always the case.

Iowan Mike Lamb nearly lost his boat during test and tune day when his propeller broke and punched a hole in the hull.

The job of driving 200 mph on water is not an easy one, and Lamb says, "You're always looking down the track, when you're at the start line. And you're looking for waves and other things. You can't really see anything floating. That's up to the feel taking care of the track, but you're always thinking about that and a lot of other things. You always have to have respect for the track, because when you lose that respect, that's when something is going to go wrong."

Lamb and his team spent all of qualifying working to repair his boat, and he hopes to be on the water tomorrow at 10 a.m. for the start of finals.
