ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia Tech's defense made a strong opening
statement by holding Notre Dame to minus-8 yards rushing in the
Yellow Jackets' 33-3 win Saturday. Michael Johnson, who had one of
Tech's nine sacks, says Tech's goal is to be the nation's top-rated
The minus yardarge place the Yellow Jackets as the nation's top run defense following the first week and fifth in total defense.
The Jackets kept the Irish off balance all day with blitzing, forcing three fumbles in addition to the nine sacks, forcing six three-and-outs and holding the Irish to 122 yards total offense.
Tech didn't allow any points in the first half. That was the third time in the last four games the Yellow Jackets didn't allow a touchdown in the first half.
Probably most surprising was how Tech dominated even though Notre Dame knew what to expect. Every short yardage situation, Tech defenders met Irish ball carriers behind the line of scrimmage.
