Behind every great basketball coach, there's a top notch assistant. For Augusta State and Dip Metress, that assistant is Robbie McKinlay.
McKinlay actually played for Metress at Belmont Abbey. After a year of pro ball in Australia, he wanted to get back into coaching, thus the reunion with Metress. What's different about ASU from other programs is that he's technically part time with the pay that reflects it. That's all about to change though.
"I sort of wanted to stick it out for Benny (Madgen) flea (Daniel Dixon) and Howard (Brown) this year but it's definitely coming to a point. I can't lie, I need a full time job." said McKinlay
Things really got interesting a year ago. His VISA to stay in the U.S. was up. He had to go back to Australia to get things worked out, which posed some trying times.
"I went home and when I left this country, I had a three year ban" added McKinlay "I sort of come to the realization that maybe I won't be back."
With plenty of help from the right people, everything is now legal. Now, more than ever, he's Dip's right-hand man, doing just about everything you could imagine as well as trying to keep him out of trouble on the court.
"Sometimes it's a little harder then other" Robbie says laughing
That makes it entertaining yes?
"Oh yea, it's a lot of fun. I hadn't done my job quite as well the last four games, he has been "t-eed" up a couple of times."
Of course, he'd love to be a head coach some day. For the time being, where Dip goes, Robbie goes.
"He jokes about that." said Dip Metress "You ever leave here, I'm on the U-Haul. I said you're driving because I make him drive a lot!"
"Not a second, I'd go with him in a heartbeat" added McKinlay.
