Greensboro, NC – The GreenJackets (50-20, 1-0) opened up the second half of the season with a 6-2 win over the Greensboro Grasshoppers (38-32, 0-1) on Thursday night. Starter Ben Snyder won his fourth straight game and Bobby Felmy connected for two home runs in the game.
Snyder (8-2) worked six innings and allowed both Grasshopper runs in the first inning on a two run homer. Snyder allowed six hits, walked one and struck out six.
The GreenJackets broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Marcus Sanders scoring Dayton Buller from second for a 3-2 lead. Buller led off the frame with a single then moved to second on a balk from reliever Chris Leroux.
Augusta added three more runs in the eighth inning for a 6-2 lead on an RBI double from Ryan Rohlinger and a two run homer from Bobby Felmy, his second of the game and 10th of the season.
Rob Grace worked two innings in relief of Snyder and allowed just one hit and struck out a batter. David Newton worked the ninth inning allowing on hit and struck out two.
The GreenJackets took 1-0 lead in the first inning on Rohlinger’s 10th home run of the season, a solo homer to left field.
The Grasshoppers came right back in the bottom half when John Raynor led off with a single then Spike McDougal followed with a homer to right field for a 2-1 lead.
Snyder did not allow anything after that though and Augusta tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning on Felmy’s first home run of the game, a solo shot to right-center field.
The GreenJackets and Grasshoppers will play the second game of their series on Friday night with Augusta sending right-hander Adam Cowart (9-3, 2.01) to the hill. Greensboro will counter with right-hander Hector Correa (1-3, 9.61). First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
