Kata Swimming His Way to UGA

News 12 @ 6 June 19

Augusta, GA-- To be a competitive swimmer at the national level it takes more then most of us can ever imagine. For Martin Kata, he's on the verge of becoming one of the best the area has ever seen.

In a sport where tenths and hundreths of a second matter, Evans grad Martin Kata isn't that far off from being one of the elite in the nation.

"In the Senior Nationals you had to make the cut," says Martin Kata. "I missed the Olympic trials by a half a second in the 200 IM."

Where you disappointed?

"Not really, it just made me want to work harder and get it this year," Kata says.

It's not the only big meet Kata has been part of. He's a two-time state champion and just last week he returned from Hawaii where he was part of the high school All-American team.

"That was a really fun experience," says Kata. "It made me part of a team in swimming."

This fall, Kata will swim for Georgia, one of the top programs in the nation. It's contrary to his two older brothers who have and are swimming for South Carolina. Still they were the fuel for Martin's fire.

Kata says, "I watched them swim in college meets and it made me want to go swim there, too."

Kata's expecting to get quicker once he gets to UGA since coaches will work on technique. Besides his Olympic goals, there's new one's to look forward to.

"For college I want to make NCAAs; that's my goal," Kata says.

Kata practices pretty much six days a week, usually twice a day during the summer. Before he goes off to Georgia, he's planning to swim in the Junior Nationals in Indiana in late July.
