Augusta, GA – The GreenJackets (42-18) opened up a seven game home stand with an 8-1 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats (18-42) on Thursday night. Starter Henry Sosa matched a career high with eighth strikeouts over 5.1 innings for the win and Bobby Felmy homered and drove in a season high four runs to lead the offense. Dayton Buller chipped in with two RBIs for Augusta.
Sosa (6-0) allowed one run on one hit while walking three batters. Sosa ran into trouble in the sixth inning when he walked two batters and hit one to load the bases.
Paul Lussier worked in relief of Sosa recording the final two outs and allowing one inherited run to score in the sixth with Augusta already leading 7-0. Lussier pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless ball allowing three hits, no walks and three strikeouts.
The GreenJackets took the early lead in the first inning when Felmy connected for a two-out RBI single scoring Emmanuel Burriss from third for a 1-0 lead. Burriss led off the frame with a single then stole second and moved up to third when Ryan Rohlinger grounded out.
Augusta plated four more runs in the third inning on four hits and again it was Felmy starting the scoring. Burriss connected for a one out triple then after Rohlinger walked, Felmy followed up with an RBI single scoring Burriss for a 2-0 lead. After a wild pitched moved both runners up Dayton Buller connected for a two-out, two run single for a 4-0 lead. Marcus Sanders followed with an RBI double to cap off the scoring in the inning.
The GreenJackets added two more runs in the fourth inning when Felmy connected for a two-run homer with two outs for a 7-0 lead. It was Felmy’s sixth home run of the season.
Savannah starter Tim Stronach (2-6) took the loss lasting 3.2 innings and allowing seven runs on seven hits. Stronach walked three, struck out two and hit two batters.
Augusta added one more run in the seventh inning on an RBI infield hit from James Simmons.
David Newton pitched a perfect ninth for Augusta with one strikeout to finish off the Sand Gnats.
The GreenJackets and Sand Gnats will play the second game of their four game series on Friday night with Augusta sending right-hander Kevin Pucetas (6-1, 1.55) to the hill. Savannah will counter with right-hander Matt Durkin (2-2, 2.93). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
