AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State moved up to No. 4 Tuesday afternoon in the third NABC/Coaches Poll of the 2009-10 season.
The Jaguars, who debuted at No. 6 in the first regular-season poll and improved to No. 5 last week, are off to a 6-0 start after victories over Paine and Armstrong Atlantic State last week. With six straight wins to open the 2009-10 campaign, ASU is off to the program’s best start since the 1972-73 season.
With the ranking, ASU has now appeared in the top 25 for a school-record 39 consecutive weeks, dating back to the 2006-07 campaign. The Jaguars have been ranked among the nation’s top 10 in 18 of the last 19 polls, and reached the top five for the ninth time under head coach Dip Metress.
Seattle Pacific’s win over top-ranked BYU-Hawaii, along with losses by three other teams in last week’s top 10, caused a significant change at the top of the poll. Central Missouri (6-0) moved to the top spot in the national rankings for the first time since 1980.
UCM is followed in the rankings by Valdosta State; however, the Blazers’ loss Monday to Columbus State was not reflected in the rankings as only the results through Sunday’s play are considered. Florida Southern and ASU also moved up one spot apiece to third and fourth, respectively, while Indiana (Pa.) took over the fifth spot in the rankings.
