Charleston, WV – The GreenJackets (32-14) had their three game winning streak snapped with a 4-2 loss Wednesday afternoon to the top team in the Northern Division, the West Virginia Power (29-14). Kevin Pucetas recorded his first loss of the season and Matt Weston connected for a two run homer in the ninth as Augusta avoided the shutout.
The GreenJackets were held off the scoreboard for the first eight innings before Weston came through with his team leading fourth home run of the year, a two-out shot to right field. Bobby Felmy reached with a one out single in the frame to set up Weston.
Pucetas (5-1) allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings of work. The right-hander did now walk a batter and struck out four.
West Virginia took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Brent Brewer and Michael Brantley connected for back-to-back RBI singles with two outs in the frame.
The score stayed 2-0 until the seventh inning when the Power got what proved to be two big insurance runs off reliever Paul Lussier. With one out in the frame and a runner on first Taylor Green connected for his sixth home run of the season, a two-run homer to right field, giving West Virginia a 4-0 lead.
Steven Calicutt pitched a scoreless eighth inning for Augusta allowing one hit and recording a strikeout.
Weston connected for his two-run homer off Power closer E.J. Shanks.
The GreenJackets and Power finish up their series Thursday night with right-hander Adam Cowart taking the hill for Augusta as the GreenJackets look for the series win. Lefty Zach Braddock (3-1, 1.30) takes the hill for the Power as they look for the series split. Game time is a 7:05 p.m.
