Augusta, GA – The GreenJackets (26-8) did something Thursday night they haven’t done all year, lose back-to-back games. Augusta fell 3-2 in 11 innings to the Columbus Catfish (22-12) after rallying to tie the game in the eighth inning 2-2. Clayton Tanner suffered the loss in relief allowing one unearned run and Augusta was held hitless for the first 4.1 innings in the game.
Tanner (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season but pitched well enough for a win working 5.2 innings in relief and allowing just one walk and one hit, a one out double in the 11th inning. Tanner left the game in the 11th for closer Juan Trinidad and Desmond Jennings on second base.
Jennings stole third base then scored on the passed ball from Nestor Rojas to give the Catfish a 3-2 lead in the 11th inning.
Tanner gave the GreenJackets offense a chance to get back into the game entering in the sixth trailing 2-0. Tanner retired the first eight batters in a row before issuing a two out walk in the eighth and also struck out a career high seven batters.
Augusta trailed 2-0 heading into eighth inning but plated two runs to tie the game off reliever Ryan Owen. Henry Guiterrez led off the frame with a single then Dayton Buller followed up with an RBI double to trim the lead to one. Buller was lifted for pinch runner Mike McBryde and then two batters later scored on the two-out RBI single from Brian Bocock to tie the game at 2-2.
Ryan Owen (3-2) suffered the blown save for Columbus but recorded the win working three innings and allowing two runs on three this. Ryan Reid pitched the ninth for his second save of the year allowing just one walk and striking out three.
Augusta had a chance in the 10th inning after Gutierrez led off the frame with a walk. Gutierrez was lifted for pinch runner Sharlon Schoop and McBryde then sacrificed him over with a bunt. Schoop then moved to third on Marcus Sanders fly ball out to right but was left stranded at third when James Simmons grounded out back to the pitcher.
The GreenJackets missed an opportunity to score in the seventh inning as well when Bocock was left stranded at third base with just one out in the frame.
Henry Sosa started the game and received the no decision working five innings and allowing two runs, three earned on three hits. Sosa did not walk a batter and struck out five.
Columbus took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a two-out RBI double from Matt Fields scoring Ryan Royster. Royster reached on a fielding error from Sanders with one out in the frame.
The Catfish made it 2-0 in the fourth inning on a one-out RBI single from Royster scoring Cesar Suarez from second.
The GreenJackets and Catfish will wrap up their series on Friday with Augusta looking for the series split. The GreenJackets will send right-hander Rob Grace (1-1, 2.74) to the hill while Columbus will counter with right-hander Heath Rollins (2-0, 1.57). Game time is at 7:05 p.m.
