AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State senior Fred Brathwaite was named the first Peach Belt Conference Player-of-the-Week of the 2009-10 season, according to an announcement from the league office Monday afternoon.
The award is the first for Brathwaite, a preseason all-conference selection and a third-team, all-league pick last year as a junior.
A 6-4, 226-pound guard/forward from Columbus, Ga., Brathwaite has helped lead eighth-ranked ASU to a 2-0 start. He opened the season with a team-high 19 points and eight rebounds against West Georgia on Sunday, Nov. 15 in the Jags’ 79-57 season-opening victory over the Wolves.
Brathwaite then exploded for a career-high 32 points and matched his career-high with 12 rebounds in a 68-58 win at Benedict on Saturday, Nov. 21. The senior averaged 25.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game while shooting 60 percent (17-of-28) from the floor and 85 percent (17-of-20) from the line.
With ASU trailing by nine at halftime to Benedict, Brathwaite scored 22 of his 32 after intermission as the Jags rallied for the victory, outscoring the Tigers 42-25. He hit 11-of-14 field-goal attempts from the floor and 10-of-11
from the line in that game. For the week, he also averaged 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game.
ASU travels to metro-Atlanta on Wednesday, Nov. 25 to take on NAIA-power Life University. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m., in Marietta, Ga.
