Butler High grad organizes celebrity weekend

April 20, 2007

AUGUSTA, Ga.---It's always nice when pro athletes give back to the community they grew up in. For the second straight year, former Butler High standout and now Tennessee Titan tight end Ben Troupe is doing just that with a celebrity weekend.

Today there was a meet and greet session for kids at the Bernie Ward Community Center on Lumpkin Road. Not only is the host there, but plenty of his NFL friends made the trip to the Garden City. Today was for the kids, with each youngster receiving a T-shirt and other items. It was also a great chance to see that there's more to these guys then just football.

"The difference between us and them is just mindset," Troupe said. "We try to let these kids that through hard work and preparation they can be anything they want to be. The premise of being out here is not just being a professional athlete, it's being successful. We just want to show them we appreciate them as much as they appreciate us."

"It's all about the kids when its all said and done," said Quinton Ganther. "This is our future, so we have to allow the kids to know that you don't have to be a professional athlete to be successful, it's more to life than just playing sports and being successful."

NFL Rookie of the Year Vince Young didn't make it in town this afternoon but is expected for the charity basketball game tomorrow night at Paine College. Tickets for that are just $10 dollars, and an autograph session will be held at halftime.

The celebrity weekend wraps up Sunday with a free picnic at Eisenhower Park.
